How to identify bentonite

In the naked eye identification, high-quality bentonite is pure white, and generally there are gray or light yellow white ones. It often presents light green, light green, rose red, and other colors due to water absorption or impurities. It remains pure white, gray, or light yellowish white after air drying. After being broken by hand, the cross section is uneven and in a jelly shape. It has a greasy luster and a slippery touch. It can absorb water and expand, and good ones can become colloidal. If the water is lost after long-term air drying, it can become loose again. Bentonite can adsorb or absorb various colors due to its strong ion exchange ability. Mixing it with oil can make the oil smoother. Its fine powder and water suspension have good dispersion (dispersion) and are not easy to precipitate. The type of natural bentonite is mainly divided into calcium, sodium, hydrogen, lithium montmorillonite, etc. according to the relative content of the cations in montmorillonite. The clay mainly composed of calcium montmorillonite is called calcium based bentonite. Most bentonite mines in China mainly produce calcium based bentonite, which is cheaper and easier to obtain than sodium based bentonite. Therefore, we use calcium based bentonite in broiler and layer experiments. Feed chickens with bentonite additives because they enjoy good palatability.
However, relying solely on sensory evaluations such as the naked eye described above is not accurate. There is no unified national standard for identifying bentonite in China. Most mines implement the Ministry of Machinery's "Ministry issued standards for foundry bentonite and clay" (1997) and enterprise standards. The main measurement methods include the absorption capacity, water content, colloid medium, transmittance, wet compression strength, coefficient of expansion, pH value, etc. The measurement methods and standards are omitted here.
